Remarks from Roy Williams
- Senior Sports Writer for the Auckland Sunday Star and noted New Zealand   sportsman ...
:: ::

Roy Williams has been a sports journalist for 35 years -since 1965- He has covered 4 Olympics Games and 5 Commonwealth Games. He was 1966 Commonwealth Games decathlon gold medallist, the 1966 New Zealand Sportsman of the Year and is in the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame.

"As a sports journalist of long standing, I have had the pleasure of following the sporting career of Anne Audain from its very beginning. It has been an honor. My wife Ngaire and I count Anne as one of our very special friends.

My first article on Anne was when she was 14 years old and the headline read " Girl Athlete Could Be Great".

While her athletic career reached greatness it is Anne's other qualities that have so impressed us.

Anne has a soft caring nature, always thinking of others perhaps less fortunate than herself.

As a coach of large number of teenage track and field athletes, many from low socio-economic backgrounds, I have been deeply affected by what Anne has contributed to their lives.

She has regularly sent boxes of shoes and clothing to New Zealand from the USA at her own expense, and has inspired many youngsters with her motivating message.

I have always held the belief that you can be the best sportsman or sportswoman in the world but unless you are first and foremost a decent human being you are not worth knowing.

Anne Audain is that and more. Her considerate, caring nature however belied her personality once she put on her running shoes and started racing. Tough and aggressive, Anne knew only one way to compete- give it everything you have at all times!

She took no prisoners!. I am proud to know her - she is one top lady.
